The Android operating system knows when you are in range of a base station which can potentially provide 5G.
Some phone manufacturers use this trigger to display the 5G logo, even though your phone may not actually be connected using a 5G signal.
Other manufacturers, such as Samsung, display two types of 5G icons. The more prominent one indicates a “live” 5G connection, and the fainter one indicates that 5G is potentially available in the area.
When 5G is only potentially available, your phone is actually using 4G, as Samsung explains here.
In these circumstances the SignalTracker app shows the technology used as LTE/4G but says “5G is available but not connected” above the speedo.
When there is an active 5G connection, its signal strength is shown in a slider below the speedo.
